CRG Network Taxpayer Rally – Sunday, October 4th

October 2, 2009

A few short years ago, residents of Milwaukee County got mad at the outrageous spending habits approved by the Milwaukee County Board at taxpayers’ expense. Many people from around our county worked together, established CRG Network and were very successful in their efforts to oust former county executive, Tom Ament, and several county board supervisors.

High taxes and government spending are hurting Milwaukee County families and killing jobs. The recession is making it nearly impossible for us to pay our bills and make ends meet. All the while, government refuses to  listen, the tax-and-spend politicians continue to waste our hard-earned dollars. Politicians like Milwaukee County Board Chairman Lee Holloway want to raise our property taxes to fuel their out-of-control spending habits.

Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker has crafted a responsible, balanced budget that will freeze taxes, control spending, and rein in public employee benefits. Sounds good to me!

But several members of the County Board are fighting Walker’s common sense approach.

Nothing will change unless we make our voices heard!

It’s time to do something to make our politicians listen . . .

Join us at the Taxpayer Rally

When:  Sunday, October 4th

Time:  2 – 4 p.m.

Where:  Serb Hall, 5101 W Oklahoma Ave., Milwaukee

See you there!

Voluntary Photo ID Bill Introduced Today

September 25, 2009

What a great idea . . . and it’s in response to a constituent request!

State Senator Ted Kanavas (R-Brookfield) and State Rep Bill Kramer (R-Waukesha) introduced the “Protect My Vote Act.” This bill creates a voluntary photo ID program allowing voters who opt-in to the program to have their names highlighted on the voter rolls requiring the election worker to ask for the person’s photo ID. Sen. Kanavas introduced the bill at the request of a constituent who went to the polls in 2006 only to discover someone had already voted using his name.

You know ‘the progressives’ in our state will immediate howl foul.  Even though it’s voluntary. Even though it will give voters more confidence in our electoral system.

Kanavas and Kramer are currently circulating the bill, soliciting legislative cosponsors. Please call your rep (you can find their contact info on the “Contact Your Elected Representatives” tab of this website) to tell them what you think about this bill.

As for me, I think it’s a great idea and will be asking my state reps to immediately sign on as co-sponsors.

Obama’s speech: good rhetoric, not so good facts

September 10, 2009

The AP has a fact check article out today, and on the big issues, President Obama is not being very truthful.

The entire package (as we know it) will billions of dollars.   Non-partisan congressional budget scorers say something like $240 billion.  In addition,

CBO Director Douglas Elmendorf had this to say in July: “We do not see the sort of fundamental changes that would be necessary to reduce the trajectory of federal health spending by a significant amount.”

In other words, the non-partisan budget scorers do not see this program as solving the major problem that reform is supposed solve–skyrocketing costs.

What’s more, on the public option (and Obama and left’s past strategy of using it swallow private health insurance), no one is making any promises:

OBAMA: “Nothing in this plan will require you or your employer to change the coverage or the doctor you have.”

THE FACTS: That’s correct, as far as it goes. But neither can the plan guarantee that people can keep their current coverage. Employers sponsor coverage for most families, and they’d be free to change their health plans in ways that workers may not like, or drop insurance altogether. The Congressional Budget Office analyzed the health care bill written by House Democrats and said that by 2016 some 3 million people who now have employer-based care would lose it because their employers would decide to stop offering it.

In the past Obama repeatedly said, “If you like your health care plan, you’ll be able to keep your health care plan, period.” Now he’s stopping short of that unconditional guarantee by saying nothing in the plan “requires” any change.

That’s lawyer-speak.  Obama is limiting himself and being very careful.  But if the public option is subsidized, it will compete with private plans and (because it is subsidized) will eventually chip away at private plans.

and further, on the cost savings:

OBAMA: “Don’t pay attention to those scary stories about how your benefits will be cut. … That will never happen on my watch. I will protect Medicare.”

THE FACTS: Obama and congressional Democrats want to pay for their health care plans in part by reducing Medicare payments to providers by more than $500 billion over 10 years. The cuts would largely hit hospitals and Medicare Advantage, the part of the Medicare program operated through private insurance companies.

So, in other words, the Democrats will simply just pay people less and save $500 billion.  What a great plan!  Yes, it would be good if government and government contractors were more efficient.  In other words, Obama will just shift these costs over to others in order to pay for his plan.

Apostle David King is running for secretary of state

September 6, 2009

A man of God, Apostle David King has decided to throw his hat in the ring for Wisconsin secretary of state.  This is notable for many reasons, but I think the most important is that David King can speak to the saving power of grace.

He’ll have a website very shortly, and we’ll invite him to our Wauwatosa Republicans happy hour so that you can meet him in person as he begins his campaign.

Donate money to our 15th Annual Pizza Party on October 9th to make sure that we can get the message out about David King, Jason Punzel, and Leah Vukmir.

Pretty Clever Democrats

September 3, 2009

In the last budget, the legislature took away half of the 60% long-term capital gains exclusion.  It was a bad move because it decreases the chances that people will invest in Wisconsin.  Senator Jim Sullivan didn’t vote for that budget; but then again, he didn’t do much to stop it, either.

Now, Senator Sullivan and other Democrats have buyer’s remorse and are proposing that a person should be allowed to have the 60% exclusion if they hold property for 5 years. That’s a better policy than we have now, but still doesn’t get us back to what it was before this last budget.

So the Democrats are going to trumpet their actions to promote investing in Wisconsin while those proposals will not even get us back to where we were before this budget (and it’s not like Wisconsin was a mecca for private investment then either).  Raising the heck out of taxes and then giving back a small amount of it to call yourself “business friendly” may fool some people, but it’s pretty thin gruel to say that you’re leading on economic development.

The New Cell Phone Tax

September 1, 2009

As the MacIver Institute details here, Gov. Doyle may be on the outs, but his legacy lives on, in the new cellphone tax.

The cell phone tax is a terrible tax policy!  It’s a tax that’s designed specifically so that you don’t know that you’re paying it (creating ignorance among taxpayers of what they are really paying is not a good goal of taxation).  It’s administratively burdensome, but only generates a small portion of the state budget.  It operates as a fee, but it’s a tax because the money is unconnected to the activity that generates it.

I think that conservatives get too much guff for yelling “lower taxes” all the time.  When we complain about taxes, we think that (1) the government spends too much, (2) the government collects its tax revenue in silly and wasteful ways, and sometimes (3) the government is using tax collections to change our behavior (which is generally not good tax policy, either).
